Week Ending - July 19th, 1999

Well I'm back from a short vacation, can you guess what I did on my vacation? Yes you guessed right, I went fishing. I enjoyed it very much, but I am glad to be back in my beloved " Pine Island Sound."

The most reliable fishing has been for snook, the snook loves the warm water and the abundance of bait fish that are spending their summer in our waters. During the summer months it is not uncommon to catch a good number of " linesiders" in one day, especially on the beaches.

This week I had a nice day out on the water with Michelle, Justin, and Kelly Battles. We were in search of snook, so we went to the beach. Our livewell was full of sardines (pilchards) and pinfish, and with the tide coming in the conditions looked good. The pinfish was the snooks' meal of choice, we hooked up almost constantly throughout the day. We caught over 30 snook and lost quite a few. Michelle kept up with her two brothers, it was a challenge for them not to be out fished by their sister.

We also saw some small tarpon, but did not succeed in hooking up on any of them. Well, there's always next time. We had a great time, I'm looking forward to seeing them again.

Joe Saunders and his son Joey also fished with me this week. Joey is 11 years old, and he is getting started on fishing. Joey caught his first snook that day, he also caught trout, and had a great time. Keep on fishing Joey, and next time we can go for the "BIG ONE".

Joe Saunders and I went fishing the second day of their stay. We saw some tarpon, and took some cast at them with a "topwater lure" and had no success. Then we moved to a flat where a nice school of Reds were hanging out, they were very spooky, and our efforts produced no Reds for us. The tide was just starting to go out, so we moved to a mangrove shoreline and chummed with some pilchards. We saw Snook, and Reds busting the freebies of bait under the mangroves.

Joe was equipped with 10 LB test line and a 7' G.Loomis rod, he began catching Snook after Snook until the current slowed down. He also caught a Red, and a Mangrove Snapper. With an earlier catch of Trout, Joe had himself an "Inshore Slam" ( Snook, Red, and Trout).

I had a great time with them and hope to see them in the near future.
Catch and Release is really fun, try it sometime !

Thanks,
Capt. Rey Rodriguez
