Week Ending - May 16th, 1999

In tarpon fishing the word "JUMP" is used quite often, more often than the word "CATCH". " How many tarpon did you jump today?", is usually the question among tarpon anglers. To be able to land a large tarpon with light tackle, may require loosing a few in the process.  The power and stamina of a large tarpon is legendary, in fact it surprises even the experienced anglers.

This week we had some nice weather, light winds are ideal for tarpon fishing.  My clients, Phil, Chris, and Matt came to do battle with the tarpon, for Phil and Matt, it was their first experience, and they were not disappointed.   Phil hooked up first, a fish well over 100 lbs came out of the water, and after several jumps, it took off, and almost spooled us. It was a tough fish, and we had him for over one hour. It finally broke off, the 20lb line had been weakened after coming in contact with other tarpon in the school.

We jumped about 10 tarpon in the three days we fished, every fish gave us a great show of power, acrobatics, and stamina. For Phil and Matt, next year couldn't be any farther away.

The next day Chris Rockers and I went in search of his first tarpon on fly. Chris hooked up a tarpon on a cockroach fly, but lost it after a few jumps. We had hundreds of fish coming toward us, and they were rolling pass our boat, providing Chris with a great experience. With practice he will be able to improve his chances, he will be a good tarpon angler.

The snook fishing is also very good, with fish on the beaches and along the outside islands.

There is still plenty of time for tarpon, so grab your fly rods, or spinning outfit, and come battle with the "SILVER KING".
