Week Ending - May 4th, 1999
Imagine being on the water by
sunrise, the quietness of the morning, only
being disturbed by the sound of tarpon gulping for air,or maybe it's
an early afternoon, a nice sea breeze starts blowing, and the tide is
moving out , creating the perfect dining conditions for snook, trout,
and redfish. You can take your pick, because that is exactly what happened
this week in paradise.
Steve and his wife Lindy are from South Carolina, Steve is an avid bass
fisherman, so I was anxious for him to experience some snook fishing.
It was early afternoon when we went to the "PASS". The tide was moving
out so we drifted our baits, and for two hours we had bites in every drift.
We caught snook , trout, and jack crevalle, there was also some Spanish
mako available. We had a nice afternoon and Steve had his first taste
of snook fishing. What a treat.
The month of May belongs to the tarpon, the schools are here at the gathering
place, and the fever has gotten out of control . I took Peter and Doreen
Barker, they are from the Highlands of Scotland. Salmon fishing is Peter's
passion , but having tasted tarpon fishing in the past, his vacation could
not be complete without a tarpon outing. It was calm as it could possibly
be when we got to the "SPOT". Tarpon were lay up in the surface like logs,
others were rolling and finning all over . Within 10 minutes, we were
hookup, Doreen was on too. The tarpon was about 75 lbs and it took us
about 1 1/2 hours to bring him next to the boat, when it finally broke
off. Doreen did a great job, she was excited, and her adrenaline was carrying
her through. I'm sure this will be as memorable for them, as it was for
me.
Tight lines,
