Week Ending - April 10th, 1999
The weather is warm, the winds are down, and the fishing
has heated up
this week.
You take your pick, snook, reds, or tarpon, they were active as the temperature
reached the high 80's. The week started with Mr. Bob Smckiley, and his
friends Jim and Steve. We went tarpon fishing first thing in the morning,
it was calm, warm, and beautiful. After some scouting, we found the tarpon
and we managed to hook one, but we lost him as he jumped. Later, we went
snook fishing in the mouth of the river with a livewell full of sardines.
I charmed the snook, they were busting the freebies along with some big
jack crevally. We managed to catch snook, crevally and reds, and lost
several fish on the mangroves. Subsequent trips produced some snook and
jacks on the sardines.
Here's a little tip for you snook anglers, remember to keep your rod tip
down, for the snook will go to the mangroves and cut your line on the barnacles that live on the roots.
I was able to sneak out one day and go looking for tarpon with my buddies,
Capt. Shawn McGary and John Meyer, and we found a nice school of tarpon.
I was able to hookup 2 tarpon on fly, and I landed one about 50 lbs,
altogether we went 3 for 8. Angler John Meyer, landed one on live bait,
about 115 lbs, it was a very strong fish, but John is a veteran tarpon
angler, and he managed the tarpon flawlessly.
As you can tell, the "HEAT IS ON" on the flats, and the perfect time for
a 'SLAM" is here.
Tight Lines,
Capt. Rey Rodriguez
