Week Ending - March 20th, 1999

Fishing has a way of creating lasting memories. From young to old, the magic of a day on the water never looses it's luster.

My week started with my client Roger Strand. Roger is a retired surgeon that has been fly fishing longer than I have been alive. Since all his fly fishing experiences has been done on fresh water, our search was his first redfish on fly.

We had a picture perfect morning with a nice low tide, redfish were tailing and traveling all over the flats. Roger witnessed this with the eyes of a child, a new memory that will remain with him for the rest of his fishing life. We tried very hard to connect with the redfish, but it did not happen. Nevertheless the transition to saltwater fly fishing has started for Roger, and maybe next time he will be able to cast the distance needed to catch the reds

My next trip included a grandfather, father and son trio. Mark Peters had called me for a live bait charter, and snook was their target. Charlie is Marks' son, he is a teenager, and this was to be his first experience with a snook. With memories of my own first experiences, Charlie became my priority. After netting a livewell full of pilchards we headed for Pine Island Sound. On our first stop, I baited Charlie's hook with a lively pilchard and on his first cast we had a hookup. His FACE said it all, laughing and struggling to keep the snook away form the mangroves, Charlie finally won the battle, and a 29 inch snook was landed. It was a great day with over 10 snook and also Mark Peters accomplished a slam (snook, red, trout) .

The next day I had Tom Sidar, and his two sons, Matt and Jack. We caught a couple of snook, and several redfish along with some seatrouts. Matt outfished his brother and his dad this time, but they said that they will be back for a rematch.

Saturday was my birthday, so I took the day off, and guess what ? I went fishing, with my friend Mike Dewese, we went in search of tarpon. Warm weather this week had raised my expectation for an early tarpon bite. Tarpon love threadfin herring, so after netting some, we headed for the SPOT. It was a slick, calm morning and the tarpon were there, free jumping and rolling everywhere. We jumped 3 tarpon, that looked about 80-90 LB, but we did not land any of them.
Still I think that was the Lord's way of wishing me a happy birthday.
