Week Ending - March 14th, 1999
Of all the species we have in Southwest Florida, none is
more popular than the snook. The linesider is definitely the "KING" of our
flats. From the moment he takes your bait, you know that you have a challenge to look
forward to, especially if there are any nearby obstructions.
This week the snook came alive on the flats, it is not uncommon to hook up to 10 or more
snooks during the summer months, in March however, hooking up to the same amount of snook
is considered a great day . In the late winter to spring, snooks are on the move . The
cold temperatures can kill them, so they must be on the look out for incoming cold fronts. But in between the cold fronts, the snook will bite, especially in the early incoming
tide. They congregate in numbers on the deep depressions.
The week started with my client, Joe Milgram, and his buddy Ned. Our mission was to run to
Pine Island Sound and find some deep depressions on the flats where the snooks were
laying. I push poled my boat within 75 feet of a hole, with 8 LB test and 7 ft.. rods, we
made long casts to the depressions. Joe and Ned, each caught several snook and they also
lost several too. Open water makes it easier to handle the snook, with no structures near
by, the chances of landing the fish is better.
The rest of the week was very similar, we had plenty of hookups on snooks and sea trouts.
Although we saw some tailing redfish at the end of last week, the reds were not showing as
well this week.
In general, it wasn't a bad week, if you ask me , there is nothing better than spending
some quality time with the "LINESIDER".
Many Tight Lines,
