Week Ending - March 7th, 1999
It has been a long time since the days I used to fish
with handlines, but when I went from handline to flyline, flyfishing became my passion.
This week a couple of my trips were instructional charters. Bob Miller and Joe Brady spent
halfday on the water with me learning the basics of flyfishing. I thoroughly enjoyed their
enthusiasm, and their desire to learn flyfishing.
Bob even managed to hook up a couple of trouts. I hope the next time we meet, their desire
and enthusiasm for flyfishing will have grown even more than before.
Flats fishing is a game very much influenced by tides. This week, we were welcomed by very
nice low tides in the mornings at beautiful Pine Island Sound.
Wading birds, and the calm glassy surface of the flats complimented our view of the many
redfish tailing in the one foot deep waters. I dreamed of days like these, and Mike
Priztkow, my client will surely do the same, especially after a day like this. Mike wasn't
successful on the red; saltwater flyfishing requires different techniques than freshwater
flyfishing, therefore Mike couldn't quite reach the fish. Still he was bitten by flats
fishing , and he hopes to do this again soon !
John Strickland, and his friend Dick, booked a full day, they
just wanted to catch anything that would bite. We spent the morning trout fishing, I had
purchased 60 shrimps, and by late morning we were out. I don't know how many trout we
caught, but trust me, we caught quite a few. The tide was coming in all morning, so after
having lunch on the beautiful flats, we went and caught some pilchards for our afternoon
search of snook, and reds. With the tide, the fish moved closer to the mangroves, we cast
our pilchards around the oyster bars and sandy shorelines. John caught a "SLAM"
( snook, red, trout ) that day. Dick managed to catch plenty of trout, but couldn't land his snook. They were challenged by the experience, and they told me that they would like to try some tarpon fishing next time.
The week ended with me and my friend, Capt. Roger Harris going fishing together. We
scouted several flats and found the fish to be very spooky, but Roger connected with a
tailing redfish, on his beloved "BANGO LURE" , but otherwise the
"TAILERS" did not want to PLAY. After netting some live bait later in the day,
and with a higher tide, we went to a place where we had seen some snook and reds. After
some enticing with unhooked baits, the fish started to get active, Roger and I managed to
catch several snooks and reds on 8lb test line, and we had ourselves a "FISHING
FIESTA" !!! I guess we didn't have anything else better to do on our day off.
