Week Ending February , 21 , 1999

This week was not a typical February week, with temperatures above nornal, causing the water to be very warm on the flats.

This created a scenario for productive snook fishing, and the incoming new moon was also very helpful. Angler, Robert (Bob) Schuitema came aboard my Action Craft in search of his first snook. The morning was picture perfect, and our expectations were high. I had netted our bait prior to me meeting Bob at the dock, and with the livewell full of sardines, we headed for Pine Island Sound. The tide was just starting to come in, creating the ideal dining conditions for the snook.

February means crystal clear waters, so you must keep distance between you and the fish. I push poled the boat into fishing range, a 7 ' rod, with light line in hand, we fished deep depressions in the shallow flats.

Bob connected in the first cast of the day, a flounder was his catch, and although it was not what we were looking for, it was a nice sign. For the next two hours Bob connected with snook, trout, and jacks, a great way to spend his birthday.

My next trip was with Robert Demedre, and friends, Roy and Tom. We caught several snook, along with some nice trout, and lost a couple of nice fish, that looked like redfish. I must admit this was one of my favorite trips, the guys had a great sense of humor, and we had a great time. I am looking forward to seeing them again.

Red fishing slowed down some this week, still they have been pretty reliable on the lower stages of the tide, with the reds tailing and cruising the shallows. This presented some great opportunities for my fly anglers. Until next week, good fishing !
